State lawmakers on Tuesday joined doctors and parents at to announce  new legislation that requires hospitals to offer pertussis booster shots to new parents and caregivers to protect their babies' health.The law stopped short of requiring parents to get the vaccine because lawmakers said they thought it would be going too far. According to Stony Brook University President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., who is a specialist in infectious diseases, pertussis was a leading cause of death among infants and children until regular vaccination reduced it to about 1,000 U.S. cases a year by the mid- to late-1970s. However, he said, pertussis is on a comeback, with approximately 27,500 cases reported in the U.S. in 2011.

The Smithtown Central School Districts’s Annual Professional Performance Review agreement with the Smithtown Teachers Association was unanimously approved by the Board of Education.
According to a Times Beacon Record report, the approval came roughly three weeks after the state’s July 1 deadline.

An endangered sea turtle was rescued in the Long Island Sound one mile north of Mt. Sinai Harbor Monday night with the assistance of the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau.
 Marine Bureau Police Officers David Goldstein and Matthew Funaro received information from a boat via the VHF radio that a very large sea turtle was entangled in the lines of several lobster pots at 8:40 p.m Monday.
