St. James Legislator Puts Her Name In for Town Board

Legis. Lynne Nowick asks her party to consider her as candidate for Smithtown Town Board this November.

A St. James lawmaker is throwing her hat in the ring to run for a seat on the already divided Smithtown Town Board this November.

Newsday reports Legis. Lynne Nowick, R-St. James, asked Smithtown party officials to screen her as a candidate for town board. Nowick has not been screened yet and does not expect the party will call on candidates for interviews until late April.

Nowick's request is unusual given of the two seats up for re-election this November are currently held by Republicans, Thomas McCarthy, who will be running with incumbent Supervisor Patrick Vecchio, and Kevin Malloy, who will be supporting his challenger Robert Creighton.

Nowick's experience includes 12 years as a Suffolk County legislator and six years as tax receiver for the Town of Smithtown. Her last legislative term ends November 2013 due to a term limit of serving on the legislature for 12 consecutive years, according to her website.

Her late father, Edward Cannataro, also previously served 24 years as a town board member.
