Ways To Beat The Heat In Commack

A guide to some things you can do in this summer when the temperature rises.

Sitting in the house with the air conditioner pumped way up is one way to cool down when the weather heats up but it's a little boring and pretty expensive. We've compiled a list of great things to do around town this summer to cool off and have a little fun while you're at it.

Cool Down At A Water Playground

Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve on New Highway has a water playground that kids and their parents can use to cool down. Hold the fire hydrant to start the cycle of fun sprinklers. There are benches and tables to sit at and rest while watching your kids frolic.

Shoot Some Pool

Of course backyard pools are popular in the summer but with this type you can cool down and stay dry. Stop into Felt Billiards with the family to play a round or two. Waitress service is available for beer and drinks.

Enjoy An Ice Cream Sun Day

Linda and Tim Hoffman, the owners of Granny's Ice Cream & Yogurt on Jericho Turnpike, suggested one of their more than 54 flavors of ice cream. They have soft or hard ice cream and frozen yogurt. "You can even try the new lines of vegan and gluten-free ice cream we have," said Tim. "Both are very popular now."

Catch A Flick

At Commack Multiplex the air is pumping to help cool you down while you watch the hottest movies of the summer on the big screen.

Play A Round Of Dodgeball

Not kidding. On Friday and Saturday nights Lazerland on Motor Parkway has something they call Dodgeball Mania. The arena is regulation size so you know it's a legit way to duck out from those real heavy, humid nights when even after sundown there's little relief from the heat.

Shop Till You Drop

Stop by one of many clothing stores in the area to shop for a summer skirt, some shorts or a new bathing suit.

Throw A Few Frames

At Commack Lanes on Jericho Turnpike you can escape the sun while bowling a few frames. They also have a summer package with pepperoni calzones and drink specials for the grown ups.

Find A Little Shade

Get yourself out to the park and sit in the shadow of a big tree. Remember to bring lots of water, something refreshing to snack on like fruit and maybe a little portable fan to cool down with. Take a snooze or read something. Speaking of reading…

Escape Into A Cool Book

Remember that you still need to exercise your mind this summer. With the kids out of school they can still have fun, stay cool and enjoy a good book to keep up on their summer reading at the Commack Library.
