Week In Review: Teen Suicides on Rise, Graffiti Under Investigation

Commack High School is one of many districts across Long Island struggling to come to grips and find a solution for a rising trend of local teen suicides. Recent student deaths put it at the center of the issue. 


Suffolk County Hate Crimes Unit is investigating a rash of graffiti incidents at a handful of parks in the area - including Burr Winkle Park and Cedar Road Park - and while no gang activity is suspected, the offensive nature of some of the markings could lead to felony arrests.

Less than one month before Town of Smithtown officials are to continue a public hearing on a request to re-zone properties along Old Northport Road to heavy industry, civic association leaders have stepped forward offering a potential solution.

The Town of Smithtown on Tuesday voted unanimously to make it illegal to smoke at town beaches and parks, becoming one of a handful of municipalities in the state to enact such a ban.
