Week in Review: Water Main Break Floods Home, $5.3M Sandy Cleanup

A water main break flooded through Commack streets, homes and Commack Middle School's parking lot Sunday morning. 

Michael Naughton, a labor crew leader for Huntington's Highway Department, said a 12-inch water pipeline running along Vanderbilt Motor Parkway burst early Sunday morning, sending thousands of gallons of water into local neighborhood streets. 

McCulloch Drive Home Flooded by Water Main Break
Two McCulloch Drive residents woke up to a flooded home after a water main break on Vanderbilt Motor Parkway flooded areas of Commack and Dix Hills on Sunday morning. 

Bill and Barbara Brocco said they knew something wasn't quite right when they awoke to the sounds of payloaders traveling along Vanderbilt Motor Parkway towards Commack Middle School at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday. 

Smithtown Officials Approve Lowe's Plans for Commack
Smithtown Town Board gave its approval to Lowe's Home Center's plans to take over the former Commack Cinemas site on Tuesday. 

The town board's vote was another step in an ongoing 10-month planning process that will allow the home improvement company to move closer to demolition and construction. Lowe's received approval from Smithtown's Planning Board on Nov. 7.  
 

Sandy Cleanup to Cost Smithtown More Than $5.3 Million
Town of Smithtown officials released a revised estimate of $5.3 million for Hurricane Sandy's cleanup on Tuesday. And they expect the cost to continue to climb over the upcoming weeks. 

Smithtown's Highway Supervisor Glenn Jorgensen and Public Safety Director John Valentine presented their latest calculations on the cost of Hurricane Sandy to the town board in a Tuesday morning work session.

Smithtown Officials Blast Findings of Lawrence Road Study
Town of Smithtown officials have blasted the preliminary findings of the Lawrence Road Study as taking a "step backwards" for suggesting 126.4 acres be zoned for industrial and outdoor storage use.
