What Do You Want to See Here? [Empty in Commack]

The former sushi restaurant stands vacant on Jericho Tunrpike. Got any ideas?

While there are plenty of businesses thriving in Commack, there are more than a handful of empty or boarded up storefronts in the community, a testament to the hard times the area, and the country faces.

And if Monday's story on the few is any indication, it's a subject that has people talking.

Over the next few months, Commack Patch is going to spotlight these vacant businesses to foster discussion in the community on what can, should and could be done to rehab these abandoned places.

Today, we start with a large restaurant on Jericho Turnpike.

Occupied by up until it closed late last year, this location now sits empty in between strip malls. When it was open, the eatery featured all-you-can-eat buffets of sushi and sashimi, chicken dishes and desserts.

The location now is vacant and for rent. Though it is currently not listed with the Multiple Listing Service of Long Island.

It's a large space, with prime real estate on the busy Jericho Turnpike. What would you like to see here? Another sushi spot, or a different kind of eatery?

Commack needs a respectable sports tavern with a long wooden bar with hundreds of giant LCD tvs. Can we have a decent bar in this town that isn't attached to a restaurant?

Miller's Ale House would be nice!

I think its time to have a fun club for adults. There use to be a place in commack called Tiffany's it was a wine and cheese place with games. Now its time to have something like that again. Adults need places to go and hang out with their friends.

HOW ABOUT A NICE SALAD BUFFET,SOMETHING ON THE LINE OF THE OLD SIZZLER IN SMITHTOWN. GOOD PRICES,GOOD FOOD, A PLACE THAT BOTH SENIORS AND YOUNG FAMILIES CAN AFFORD.

I think Changing Times should move to the Sushi place and a Wild By Nature should take over the old Pathmark spot.

How much of a need is there for a Harbor Freight Tools which is coming soon to the Target/King Kullen Shopping Center? Will you be shopping there?
chefcristo October 19, 2011 at 04:46 PM
hi mary, yes a salad buffet (NOT SIZZLER) would be a fine idea, if has creative offerings! BUT PLEASE, NOT ANOTHER PIZZA PLACE!!!!!
chefcristo October 19, 2011 at 04:53 PM
hi "mom"...NO NEED AT ALL...AND,NO I WOULDN'T SHOP THERE. how about a buffet restaurant...NOT SIZZLER!...similar to the one replaced by charlie brown's? not sure why that place closed; i thought it was doing fine
chefcristo October 19, 2011 at 04:55 PM
PLEASE, NOT ANOTHER PIZZA JOIINT! MOST OF COMMACK'S PIZZA PLACES (AND THERE ARE LOADS OF THEM) MAKE FINE PIZZAS...OK, SOME BETTER THAN OTHERS BUT ALL GOOD!
chefcristo October 19, 2011 at 05:01 PM
good idea, susan: either wild by nature or food emporium (if you want to be "uppity" and pay those prices.) i'm a home chef and i could spend nearly hours in markets like that. also, there might be a commack call for a pan-asian market such as the one on hillside ave. in new hyde park (or williston park) or the one in plainview. the fish they carry must have been caught the day before because it's the freshest i've ever seen short of the former fulton fish market.

THE PLACE BEFORE CHARLIE BROWN WAS A GOLDEN CORRAL. ANOTHER GOLDEN CORRAL WOULD BE GREAT.
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 12:33 AM
you're right mary...by all means, the golden corral was fine. decent (not spectacular) food, moderate prices...yeah, that would be fine we me as well. i wish we "commackians" or "commackites" would have some say in the matter. IF PATCH WOULD ONLY PASS THIS INFO ON TO THE APPROPRIATE RESTAURANT PEOPLE, IT WOULD BE PERFORMING A PUBLIC SERVICE TO US WHO SUPPORT THIS SITE.

Why would anyone wish for a Golden Corral? Harbor Freight is awesome!
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 02:34 AM
harbor freight might be slated for the king kullen center, probably the former linens and things site. the restaurant...golden corral or another decent buffet...NOT SIZZLER...would be suitable for the now-defunct sushi park, about 1 mile west of king k...on the north side of jericho.

golden coral was disgusting. quality of food there was not good. we don't need more restaurants..how bout a movie theater since I don't think we all like driving to deer park or the small elwood theater

I work in the office building right across the street from this eyesore. I clearly remember it being a Chuck E. Cheese-style Nathan's before it closed in 2002-ish and became Sushi Park. Hard to believe this building's been empty for two and a half years now.
