Commack Library Sending Leftover Halloween Candy to U.S. Troops

Donations can be made from Nov. 1-15.

Have a room full of candy after last night's trick-or-treating adventures? Consider donating those leftover treats to a soldier away from home.

The Commack Public Library will be collecting leftover Halloween candy from Nov. 1 through Nov. 15 to support the Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer Foundation's Leave No Marine Behind Project.

Scherer, who was born and raised in East Northport, was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He was killed July 21, 2007 while serving in Iraq. His family created the Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Semper Fi Fund with a mission "to make one minute of one day just a little bit better for Marines stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan."

Candy can be dropped off at the library, at 18 Hauppauge Rd., Commack, where it will be sorted by teen volunteers and sent to troops overseas.

This is the third year that the library has taken part in the project.
