Kitten Rescued From Commack Drain Pipe

The tiger-striped tabby was discovered after its cries were heard through the rain.

An 8-week-old kitten has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving after it was rescued early Wednesday morning from a 100-foot-long pipe that it had fallen into behind Bagel Basket Café in Commack.

According to a Facebook post by Guardians of Rescue, in Smithtown, the organization received a call Tuesday night from a rescue organization, explaining that a kitten had fallen into a pipe behind the strip mall and that the channel was filling with water.

The tiger-striped tabby cat was discovered after its cries were heard through the rain, according to a report in Newsday.

Roto-Rooter Plumbing and Drain Services in Farmingdale rescued the kitten around 1:30 a.m., after four hours of work, the report said. According to the Facebook post, Roto-Rooter supervisor Mike Fisher gave the green light to send workers Mike Katulis and Jaime Santiesteban to the scene. The pair attached a camera to a drain snake so that they could view the kitten’s location within the pipe. The men then cut through the pavement to get the tiny kitten out of the drain.

"Happy to report this little girl is finally safe and sound," Guardians of Rescue posted on its Facebook page.

Since the rescue, the plumbing company has received an outpouring of positive feedback on social media websites.

“We're glad we were able to help. Over the years, we've rescued quite a few kitties and puppies from pipes, wells, sewers and even from behind walls. We just want to acknowledge all of your kind comments about our crew and express our appreciation,” the company posted on the Guardians of Rescue’s Facebook page.

The kitten has been named Rooter, after its rescuers, and will soon be available for adoption.
