Event Spotlight: Shave Your Head at St. Baldrick's Day

Raise funds and show your support in the fight against childhood cancer at Commack High School from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Hundreds of Commack students, staff and community members are preparing to boldly go bald to show their support in the fight against children's cancer. 

will host its annual St. Baldrick's Day Shave Your Head for a Cure for Childhood Cancer event this Friday in the auxiliary gym from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. More than 250 people are registered to participate, with 175 of them planning to shave their heads. 

The charity event raises money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money to provide funding for the most promising research in finding the cures for childhood cancer and help survivors live long and health lives. The organizations estimates that 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year and many lose their hair during cancer treatments.

Many people will be working together in teams to raise funds, but individuals are also welcome to participate. A few of last's years participants included Commack teachers Bill Scaduto, Lee Tunic, Dan Revera and Special Education teacher . 

In 2011, Commack High School raised more than $53,000. So far, more than $31,000 has been pledged this year.
