Irene Puts Commack In The News

In all the chaos of preparing for Hurricane Irene, remember your responsibilities and then remember who is in charge.

On Thursday, I got too many texts by the time it was 9 am.

Seemingly, 1010 News had announced that Commack and Kings Park were in the eye of the storm—by now, we all know to which storm I'm referring. All my friends were sending their wishes and advice on how to weather the weather.

I ran to Home Depot (both) and they were out of all the stuff that we need for this weekend. So was 7-11 (all of them), Target (both), Costco and all the other mom and pop ones that might carry the last D battery east of the Mississippi.

Then I went to Ace (the new one) and they had a flashlight, some batteries and a radio. Phew.

I ran home and put the batteries in the fridge, and shined the flashlight on the radio and I am all prepared.

All this brought back memories of the big storm in 1938. It was called the Long Island Express. That is what gave us the Expressway.

But anyways...Stay safe and enjoy the time with your family while you experiance life as it was before Edison came around with his novel inventions.

As I was in the many local stores in Commack, I saw the best and worst of the human race: the fighting over batteries, the helping one another and the neighborly interest some had to another.

Ultimatly, make the preperations that you need to do and then relax. Some things are best left up to G-d.

An earthquake and a Hurricane in one week!

It is a solid reminder of how small we all are and how powerful He is. We plan and strategize, conspire and control. And then we realize that there are certian things that we don't have power over. Then we realize that there is really nothing that we have power over.

Only ourselves.

So we prepare to the best of our ability and hunker down with a good book and a cup of coffee (or two).

The same is with so many things in our life. We sometimes agonize over missed opportunities or things that should have gone differently. If other people would have done things or if other situations would have worked out.

But then we realize: the only thing we can worry about is making ourselves better. Taking care of our responsibilities.

And the rest, leave up to G-d.

After all, He is in charge.
