The Ad Council and the New York City Office of Emergency Management Team Up for Know Your Zone Campaign

Do your part and share these resources with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to ensure everyone's well being.

As we prepare for the official kickoff to summer, the Memorial Day weekend, New Yorkers and those who work in the New York metro area should also start to prepare themselves for the Atlantic hurricane season on June first.

After Hurricane Sandy ripped through the Northeast, hurricane preparedness is something we should all take a little more seriously. Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 25-31st and the Ad Council is teaming up with the New York City Office of Emergency Management for the Know Your Zone Campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to encourage New Yorkers to find out whether their home or business is located in one of NYC’s six hurricane evacuation zones. These zones are ranked by their danger of flooding from storm surge (with zone 1 being the most likely to flood). In the event of a hurricane or coastal storm, residents in these zones may be ordered to evacuate.

Know Your Zone has information about the six hurricane evacuation zones, the hazards you may face from a hurricane and what to do to prepare: all of these resources are free at www.nyc.gov/knowyourzone. There are a few steps you can take to prepare for Hurricane Season:

· Use NYC’s Hurricane Evacuation Zone Finder or call 311 to find out whether your home or business is located in a hurricane evacuation zone.

· Understand hurricane hazards and the steps you can take to prepare.

· Sign up for Notify NYC (https://a858-nycnotify.nyc.gov/notifynyc/). Get the latest emergency information via text, phone, email, fax, Twitter (@NotifyNYC), BlackBerry Messenger and instant messenger.

· Download and print out a copy of the Ready New York Hurricane Guide. The guide contains instructions on how to develop a hurricane disaster plan and secure your home before a storm as well as a map of New York City hurricane evacuation zones. Keep a copy easily accessible in case of emergencies.
