Suffolk County police arrested three people and issues approximately 50 summonses during a traffic enforcement effort Thursday on Route 454.
As part of a continuing effort to reduce the number of crashes, Fourth and Fifth Precinct COPE (Community Oriented Police Enforcement) units conducted a joint initiative targeting aggressive and unsafe drivers on Route 454 from Commack to Holbrook on April 11, police said.
According to police, Fourth Precinct COPE Officer Guy Gourlay attempted to pull over a vehicle when the driver, Michael Russo, fled. The officer initiated a short pursuit and Russo was arrested after he became stuck in traffic. Russo, 20, of Washington Avenue, Holtsville, was charged with unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless driving, DWAI drugs and criminal possession of marijuana.
Fifth Precinct COPE Officers also arrested Cory Law, 31, of Brentwood, for a warrant, and Kevin Mazerall, 22, of Center Moriches, on a charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree.
