Firefighters Rescue Horse Trapped in Pool

Horse escaped from nearby stable.

The helped Dix Hills Firefighters and Suffolk County Police rescue a horse that was stuck in an in-ground pool at a Dix Hills home Thursday evening. 

According to Suffolk Police, three horses escaped from a stable on Grayson Court in Dix Hills just before 7 p.m. Thursday. They headed north to Carlls Straight Path where officers attempted to corral them, unsuccessfully.  The horses travelled to the rear of the property at 1394 Carlls Straight Path, where police officers and the owner of the horses managed to calm and capture two of them, police said.

A third horse, named "Mikey," broke the ice and landed in a frigid 7-foot pool, police said. Mikey remained submerged for 40 minutes as officers from the Emergency Service Section and Marine Bureau Section worked with the Dix Hills and Commack Fire Departments to bring him out of the pool. He was removed from the pool at approximately 8:10 p.m., police said.

Two firefighters involved in the rescue effort were treated for hypothermia at and are in stable condition, according to police.

Mikey's owner walked him back to his stable, police said.  There is no word on his condition as of early Friday morning.
