Motorcyclist Killed in Commack Crash

Police say a North Babylon man was ejected from his motorcycle, which then caught fire.

A motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning at the intersection of Vanderbilt Parkway and Commack Road in Commack.

According to Suffolk County Police, Anthony Jacovino was riding a motorcycle southbound on Commack Road when his vehicle collided with a 2005 Dodge pickup truck, driven by George Custance, that was traveling westbound on Vanderbilt Parkway, at approximately 4:55 a.m.

Jacovino was ejected from the motorcycle, which subsequently caught fire, police said. Jacovino, 38, of North Babylon, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Custance, 50, of South Plainfield, New Jersey, was uninjured.

The fatal crash forced the closure of Commack Road for the accident investigation between the Northern State Parkway and Vanderbilt Motor Parkway. The road reopened just before 11 a.m. Traffic was backed up on several area streets during that time as commuters resorted to alternate routes.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
