A Commack bus driver was hit and killed while walking to work in Ronkonkoma Monday morning.

Suffolk County Fifth Squad detectives said that Commack resident Wayne Wickard, 69, was crossing Veterans Memorial Highway when he was struck by a westbound 1998 Dodge Neon at the intersection of 5th Avenue at approximately 6:05 a.m.

Wickard, a driver for Baumann & Sons Bus Company who worked within the Commack School District, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

The driver of the Neon, Annette Agliato, 53, of Bohemia, was not injured, police said. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

He was my bus driver. I never knew last Friday would be it. He had such a great personality. Tomorrow at the bus stop will be different. You always came to the stop on time and brought me to school nice and early. You don't deserve this. Commack will miss you. R.I.P

My grandfather was a colleague of Wayne Bob. On Vets Highway, on one side is the bus yard and unrented lots. On the opposite side, are open businesses with large parking lots. The bus lacks a lot of parking and the lot next door isn't rented out, so it wasn't plowed. Wayne was forced to park on the opposite side of Vets highway, so Wayne must have walked across Veterans Highway and got hit then.

If we lost one of our district's drivers because the bus company is too cheap to provide parking for their drivers, then our district needs to relook at it's choice of bus companies. Beyond that, it's a long way to drive for the buses; I imagine the taxpayers have to pay up to cover the cost of the extra fuel given how far the buses have to go. One way or another we have to know what happened here, and why.

The thing is Wayne Wickard never got onto the bus. He was walking from his car to his bus and never was able to get to his bus because of the lack of parking.m

It sounds very much like he died due to corporate greed!
