Police: Mom Left Kids in Hot Car in Commack

Woman charged with two counts of child endangerment Saturday.

An East Northport woman was arrested Saturday afternoon after she allegedly left her two young children locked in a hot car, say Suffolk County Police.

Maria Luongo-Devivo, 49, of East Northport was charged with two counts of child endangerment after she aleft her two sons, ages one and five, locked in a car in the parking lot of Meat Farms supermarket in Commack.

A passerby noticed the children in the car with the windows closed around 3 p.m. and alerted a store employee who contact the police.

When police arrived, Luongo-Devivo had returned to her car and her sons were both sweating profusely with flushed faces. Police say the children were in the car without proper ventilation for approximately six minutes.

The children were checked for health issues at the scene, but did not need further medical attention. They were released to a neighbor and Child Protective Services was notified.   

Luongo-Devivo was released on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on August 1.
