Police Rescue Overdose Victim in Commack

Officials said that the man was found unconscious and was not breathing.

Police rescued a 22-year-old drug overdose victim Monday morning in Commack.

According to police officials, Second Precinct Police Officer Joseph Mango responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting that the man was unconscious and not breathing at Sheldon Place in Commack, just after midnight.

When Mango arrived, he found the man was unresponsive and was in respiratory distress, police said. A syringe was found near the victim.

The officer administered a dose of intranasal Narcan and the victim regained consciousness. The victim was transported by Commack Volunteer Ambulance to Huntington Hospital.

The Suffolk County Police Department participates in the New York State Department of Health pilot program involving the deployment of intranasal Narcan, a prescription drug used to reverse opiate overdoses. Currently, the program is being used by officers in all Suffolk County precincts, Marine Bureau and the Emergency Service Section.
