Vandals Damage Sports Equipment at Commack HIgh School

Commack school officials do not have any witnesses or video of the act.

Vandals destroyed sports equipment at Commack High School last week, and police are looking for anyone who might have information.

Suffolk County police report that a 911 was received from Pat Friel, Commack's athletic director, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14. Friel said two soccer nets had been cut up overnight while the equipment was left on the fields.

Police said that Commack school officials do not have any witnesses or security footage of the vandals. No arrests have been made in this case.

So much for the Security camera project listed in the budget

What a shame. I walk on the track 4-5 nites a week. It is easy on the knees. Has to be kids horsing around, not realizing their actions hurt the whole community.

Find the vandals. Charge them with criminal mischief. If they are kids, make the parents pay for new nets and the kids also get mandatory community service at the school. Oh, but wait, this is Commack. Mommy and Daddy might complain that its too hard on the children. Then make the parents do community service.

Oh that's so true. 80 to 90% of the kids in Commack don't have to take responsibility for their actions. Mom & Dad will just yell loud enough to get them out of it.

I do not know how long you have lived here but in 1993 two seniors defaced the commack high school track with painted vile slurs and when they were found they were prosecuted and spent some time in jail. The school board was stern then .

Would you please stop bashing Commack kids - some kids have crappy parents who do not teach them right from wrong and how they have to be accountable for their actions - this type of parent lives in every town in every city in every state - not just Commack for God's sakes.

I've lived here way too long and yes it's true some kids have crappy parents it just seems that around here it's the rule not the exception. Their children can do no wrong. The word no is not part of the parents vocabulary.

No, the board back in 1993 was not stern, and they were, IMHO, as crooked as they come. But hey, prosecute people who commit crimes on school property does divert attention from other things. But what I don't get; supposedly every part of the outdoor facilities was well covered by cameras that worked at night, etc. and could be viewed from any location setup to receive the feeds via network. Or so we were told was the result from an earlier bond issue. So there should be a video record of this crime; if there isn't, maybe we have a second crime.

Someone has to service & maintain all this high tech equipment. If its' a few years old in this school district, it probably has not been properly maintained. Perhaps someone forgot to turn it on! Maybe it would be simpler and cheaper to scrap the cameras and bring the nets in at nite.

Or maybe we were just told they needed to buy cameras, the budget gets voted yes and low an behold - where are the cameras???? Or better yet, who's friend or relative got the contract for these high tech cameras that obviously are not doing the job that they were supposed too???
pbug56 September 23, 2012 at 07:11 PM
At one point some years ago they did have good camera coverage. I wonder if they didn't properly maintain them.

After several graffiti incidents on the football field and track over the years, one would think there would be cameras all over that area
knee jerk September 24, 2012 at 02:55 AM
Jack: No, no cameras in that area, they have been moved to the intersection of Scholar & Townline to get motorists making right turns on red.

I remember being told that the whole reason for cameras out on the field was because of past vandalism, etc., and that one of the bond issues had improved the coverage. As to the traffic light, the district can't issue tickets; the county would have to install a set of traffic light cameras.
