Suffolk County police have closed down a portion Vanderbilt Motor Parkway after a serious one-car crash.
Police said a driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a utility pole on Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, west of Commack Road, near Commack Middle School at approximately 8:06 a.m. Friday. The force of the impact brought the pole down onto the car and roadway, according to police.
Early reports are the driver suffered serious injuries in the accident and was airlifted from Commack Middle School to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Commack school officials sent out an alert to parents to let them know a serious car crash in close proximity to Commack Middle School had caused police to airlift a patient from the school. No Commack students or staff members were involved in the crash.
"I have also been informed that the decision to airlift this individual is precautionary," writes Anthony Davidson, principal of Commack Middle School.
