New York State Department of Transportation announced it will be closing portions of Long Island Expressway in Commack at night over this weekend.
All the LIE eastbound lanes from Exit 48 (Round Swamp Road) to Exit 52 (Commack Road) will be closed Friday and Monday, April 2 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. .
Eileen Peters, a DOT spokeswoman, said in a statement the LIE closure is necessary so work crews can install a major overhead sign. The work is weather dependent, and inclement weather such as heavy rain or storms could delay the work.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area of the closures. If that is not possible, drivers will detoured onto the LIE south service road where there are expected to be traffic and delays. Drivers are asked to drive carefully through the work zone, follow the posted detour signs, and obey the posted detour speed limit, for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew.
Under New York State law, speeding fines are doubled in a work zone.
