Auto Center Needs Repairs [Empty in Commack]

Vacant gas station and auto shop begs to be restored on Jericho Turnpike.

The former Amoco station and auto repair center at 2209 is run down and barren, especially when juxtaposed next to its busy neighbor, .

The property has been abandoned so long that tall grass and small shrubs have sprouted up in cracks on the pavement.

On the sidewalk, a dilapidated sign that reads "Repair Service" in red lettering hangs from a post, an ironic symbol of the property's current condition.

Residents have noticed, including Patch reader Tom Mooney, who writes:

"The former Amoco gas station/tire center property adjacent to the Commack Car Wash in Commack on Rt 25 has had a broken rusty sign that is just waiting to fall down. It's not inside the fenced area and people walk under it all day. How about our Town Public Safety crews take a look and get it taken down safely before someone gets hurt."

The space is by the Smithtown Town Council to be included on a list of blighted properties in the town, though no formal plans to repair the property or crack down on the owner have surfaced.

Should the town intervene when abandoned properties could potentially pose a safety risk? Tell us in the comments.
