Gaughran Won't Seek Huntington Supervisor's Job

County Democratic leader persuades him not to run against Petrone.

The race for Huntington supervisor has one less candidate.

Newsday reported that Democrat James Gaughran decided to drop out of the race at the request of Suffolk County Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer asked him not to run.

The former Suffolk legislator told the paper, “I have too much respect for Rich to do otherwise,” Gaughran said. “Rich feels we have an incumbent and we should support him. And I’m supporting our leader.”

Gaughran said he decided to drop out after Schaffer introduced town supervisor Frank Petrone, a fellow Democrat, at a fundraiser Tuesday.
