GOP Poll: Insiders Back Paul Ryan, But Say State's a Lost Cause

One day after Mitt Romney taps the Wisconsin congressman as his running mate, Republicans in New York call move a smart one.

While analysts are debating whether Mitt Romney's choice of conservative Rep. Paul Ryan for his vice presidential running mate will help the GOP tip the scales in key battleground states, Republicans in New York told Patch the move might galvanize the party, but not enough to win this traditionally blue state.

Of the 25 political insiders who answered our Red Empire snap poll this weekend, more than two-thirds said the Wisconsin congressman will energize Republicans in the state, so much so that the same percentage thought having Ryan on the ticket will sway undecided voters to vote red.

But don't confuse that with optimism.

"New York is a lost cause ... no matter who Romney had picked. Too many NY'ers willing to accept Government handouts, kick the problems down the road and live on the next generation's wealth," one respondent said.

"New York is a flyover state, and Romney would lose even if Hillary Clinton was his running mate," said another.

Overall, most of the survey answers we received pointed to Romney having a stronger ticket with Ryan as his running mate, specifically because of Ryan's budget approach. More than two-thirds disagreed that a shift by the Democrats to campaign aggressively against Ryan's budget philosophy, which focuses on heavy cuts to government programs such as Medicare, would help them win a second term in the White House. Although, as of Sunday, President Barack Obama's senior campaign adviser David Axelrod had already dubbed Ryan's budget plans "the Ryan-Romney Plan," according to the Huffington Post, to link the presidential candidate with Ryan's controversial stance.

Streamlining wasteful government spending, reforming government programs and trimming the deficit were all priorities for respondents, with most lauding Ryan for appealing to those.

"His budget positions, while imperfect, contain some interesting ideas. Spending will be a big issue this year and the GOP can do better with fiscally conservative voters because of Ryan's presence," one respondent said.

Another dubbed Ryan, "An articulate, energetic expert on solving the dire fiscal/employment problems that the Democrats have failed at for the past 4 years."

The Red Empire Survey

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican activists, party leaders and elected officials in New York. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Surveys were conducted between July 23 and July 31, 2012.

Patch will be conducting Red Empire State and Blue Empire State surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in New York. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Henry@patch.com.)

Yep, it's the high price of single-minded GOP obstructionism. Ask Mitch McConnell, Eric Cantor, Grover Norquist and their teabagger masters if you have any questions.

I just find it hilarious that you people actually feel there is a direct correlation between a President and the unemployment rate. You do realize that it's called *macro*economics. The only thing the President has done is: appoint members of the Federal Reserve, appoint Supreme Court judges, appoint cabinet members, sign bills into law, and *suggest* policy. And all of these, mind you, require the authorization of Congress.
I suggest you all take a look at this article and stop believing that one human being can actually affect a whole nation's livelihood: http://www.freakonomics.com/2010/11/04/freakonomics-radio-how-much-does-the-president-really-matter/

And as this fact-checker states: Yes, Dems did have oversee periods of great economic growth, but that may or may not have anything to do with policy-making: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/sep/06/bill-clinton/bill-clinton-says-democratic-presidents-top-republ/

Some more fun facts for JOE;
Over 350,000 Americans left the work last month as opposed to the 96,000 jobs added, a net loss of over 254,000 jobs. If the labor participation rate today, the fourth year of Obama's term, was the same as it was in 2008, the first year of his term, unemployment would be 11.2% Millions of people have left work force and given up looking for jobs. As for the tax rate add that to the list of broken Obama promises along with immigration reform, a national energy plan and closing Gitmo. Maybe Obama should ask his friend Jeff Immelt the boss at GE and head of his jobs council about paying those taxes. Oh wait, Obama has not met with his jobs council in over 7 months because he is too busy trying to save his own ass. This from a President who promised not to rest until every American who wanted a job had a job. Hope and Change my ass, more like point and blame.
Matthew Provenzano September 7, 2012 at 04:38 pm
As a reference, here are Obama's Promises: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/
Preliator September 7, 2012 at 04:42 pm
Then one man, Barack Obama, should not have made promises he knew he could not keep and shame on the hordes of fools who believed him. Do not forget that he set the bar as high as it is, he set the premise that he was going to be everything to everyone. No one made him run for office, he knew what he was getting into and if he can blame anyone for his failures it is himself.
Obama needs to take responsibility for some thing other than undeserved credit.
Matthew Provenzano September 7, 2012 at 04:54 pm
Are you that naive, Preliator, that you believed that a politician could keep all of his promises? And according to the Meter, he broke only 16% of his promises.
Seadog24 September 7, 2012 at 05:47 pm
Jag guy, That was a great point, the pensions are ok for them but not the rest of us and the life time health care, do they even pay a co-pay? How about the college perks for their children?
JOE September 7, 2012 at 05:49 pm
Hey Preliator or should I call you genius
Obama was not in office in 2008 . He only got elected in November of 2008 and was sworn in in January of 2009. Maybe you need to go back anddo some more research. and stop reading the national enquirer
Jaguar-Guy September 7, 2012 at 06:00 pm
Hey JOE, Obama wants to lower the Corporate Tax Rate. The Republican's in their half of the house have passed a budget, that the Dem Senate won't vote on, they have passed numerous bills for work and want the re-routed Key Stone Pipeline built (that Obama refuses to allow). You are just so completely wrong (or brainwashed) to think there are no Repub. proposals put up.
MikeC. September 7, 2012 at 07:00 pm
To the right wingers, facts can be inconvenient. Some of these folks would support a Hitler/Mussolini slate if it ran on the Republican line. If you use it as a mantra, constantly hitting people over the head with it, the big lie can sway the uninformed and unsure. Obama may not have been an effective president, but not for lack of effort; Romney will take this country back to the days of the company store, mandatory church on Sundays, and a six day work week.
Preliator September 7, 2012 at 07:06 pm
That is your big retort, I got the year wrong? Brilliant. As for what you call me I prefer 'Sir' and don't forget it. Now go crawl back into bed and admire your fading Obama posters.
Preliator September 7, 2012 at 07:09 pm
A man should never make a promise he can't keep. No one made Obama make all of those promises, no one made him say any of the nonsense he did. I did not see anyone twist his arm where he said if he did not have it done in three years he was looking at one term. How about trying to hold the man accountable for the things he says in stead of looking for excuses.
Preliator September 7, 2012 at 07:20 pm
That is a rather inappropriate comment and as a father I take great exception to that. To try to make light of any kind of child abuse in any form is just disgusting and you should be ashamed. If you want to criticize me then do so but innuendo such your comment is not needed here.

If you are going to vote you have an obligation to research all the candidates. So what have you learned about Gary Johnson? Elections are not about getting rid of the guy you hate or voting simply because you want to be able to say that you voted for the winner and vicariously convince yourself that you too are a winner. This country needs change and the two major parties are not going to change anything with the exception of making things worse. You must do your homework America and then vote for the guy you think is going to improve the nation as a whole not just exact some sort of revenge for your hatred. Vote with your brains not your heart or ego.

Two years of his party controlling both houses of Congress. Two more years holding his office while Democrats kept the Senate. The Senate, ignoring its constitutional responsibility, hasn't passed a budget for well over 1,000 days.
President Obama did submit a budget to that upper house, and they voted it down by a count of 97-0. Democrat partisan Harry Reid is the leader of the Senate. An obstructionist no doubt.
