Mayfair Expansion Hearing Tonight

Proposed plans to add a 3,568-square-foot restaurant space to the mall will be discussed.

A plan to expand the Mayfair Shooping Center in Commack will come before the Smithtown Planning Board at a public hearing tonight.

Levin Management, owner of of the Mayfair Shopping Center in Commack, has proposed plans to add a 3,568-square-foot restaurant expansion to the storefront.

The Smithtown Board of Zoning Appeals previously approved a parking variance that will allow Levin Management to build an extension onto the Mayfair Shopping Center off Jericho Turnpike in Commack at its Jan. 22 meeting.

Anthony Guardino, an attorney representing Levin Management, said the new restaurant expansion would be built next to the existing Bagel Boss, behind the new Verizon Wireless storefront. Previously, this space served as the drive-through facilities for the Bank of Smithtown. 

In addition to the restaurant expansion, Levin Management's plans include the installation of curbs and sidewalks to help improve pedestrian safety in the shopping center.

Commack residents have mixed reactions to the potential addition. While many are welcoming a of a new business coming to town, some have expressed concern, citing heavy traffic and garbage. Other residents said that they would rather see the empty spaces in Mayfair filled before adding a new one.

The hearing will start at 8 p.m. at the town senior center, at 420 Middle Country Road in Smithtown.
