Newsday: GOP Primary Good For Smithtown; Do You Agree?

Regional paper says councilman's decision to take on longtime supervisor has brought life back into the local politics of Smithtown.

Calling Town Councilman Robert Creighton's decision to challenge Supervisor Patrick Vecchio a move that makes the election matter in town, Newsday's editorial board on Friday said the race may spark a change in how the town's political process works.

"Vibrant primaries that force a clash of ideas and political parties that represent a set of principles instead of a patronage protection racket are key to a healthy democracy," the paper wrote.

While Newsday doesn't endorse any candidate, their sentiment is that by forcing the primary, Creighton may spur a needed debate about how the town should be run and could even shake other potential candidates out of hiding.
