Nowick, McCarthy Edge Out Malloy in Republican Primary for Town Board

Malloy hangs onto the Conservative line for town board.

Lynne Nowick has successfully moved one step closer to making the transition from Suffolk County legislator towards a seat on Smithtown Town Board.

Nowick, R-St. James, came in first in the three-way Republican primary for Smithtown Town council winning 3,830 votes, or 38.3 percent, according to Suffolk County Board of Elections at 10:55 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Nowick petitioned her way onto the GOP primary ballot in July, after failing to get the Republican party's official endorsement.

Councilman Thomas McCarthy edged out his fellow Councilman Kevin Malloy for the second GOP line for town board this November, by 3,216 votes to 2,937 votes with all 92 of the town's voting precincts reporting.

Nowick and McCarthy will run alongside with Supervisor Patrick Vecchio as the Republican slate for Town of Smithtown seats this November.

The three candidates publicly cross-endorsed each others' campaigns earlier in August. Together, they agreed to stand in opposition to the Uplands at St. Johnland project, a proposed assisted nursing facility for Route 25A in Kings Park, protect open space and seek further business development in appropriate areas.

Malloy still has the chance to run for re-election this November as he won the Conservative primary with 321 votes over McCarthy, who received 299 votes.
