Officials Enlist Public's Help in Fighting Power Plant Reassessment

Pending legislation to restructure LIPA should require LIPA to drop tax challenge, say officials

Huntington and Northport officials will gather in Northport Tuesday to enlist public support in the effort to end LIPA's assesment challenge on the Northport power plant.

Officials are urging the public to petition Governor Cuomo and state legislators to include language resolving the assessment challenge on Northport Power Plant in pending legislation to restructure LIPA.

The news conference will detail actions the public will be asked to take to support the Town’s effort to include in the LIPA restructuring legislation the same type of language that was included to stave off massive tax increases for the Shoreham Wading River School District in the legislation creating LIPA.

Since 2010, LIPA has filed litigation seeking over $270 Million in refunds from the Town. If successful, the Town claims real property taxes in the Town would increase by over 15 percent and taxes in the Northport East Northport School District would increase by almost 60 percent.

The conference will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Soundview Boat Ramp on Eaton's Neck Road in Northport, just west of the end of Ocean Avenue. In case of rain, the conference will be held at Northport Village Hall on Main Street in Northport.
