Pothole Relief Coming to Townline Road

County legislators bring Huntington and Smithtown Supervisors together to remedy the ongoing truck traffic issue.

Local legislators came together last week to discuss a remedy for truck traffic issues along Townline Road in Commack, in response to ongoing residential complaints.

Suffolk County Legislators Lynne Nowick (R-Smithtown), Steve Stern (D-Huntington) and Minority Leader John M. Kennedy, Jr. (R-Nesconset) hosted Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio and Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone April 25 to discuss recurring complaints with Townline Road, which is on the border between Huntington and Smithtown Townships.

The legislators said that numerous complaints and meetings hosted by the Commack Civic Association led to the meeting, in which the Town officials were invited to discuss the poor condition of Townline Road.

Suffolk County Department of Public Works Commissioner Gilbert Anderson and other staff discussed both short-term plans and long term requirements associated with the roadway, according to a press release.

Anderson said that work would begin in June to begin much-needed pothole repairs and “milling and filling spot pavement repair,” which will provide some temporary relief. He said the improvements will cost $450,000.

The Suffolk County legislators requested the assistance of Suffolk County Police Commissioner Edward Webber in dealing with the quality of life issue.  Specifically, the legislators requested greater Police involvement from the Second and Fourth Precincts and the Motor Carrier Safety Unit in combatting the frequent erratic heavy truck operation, especially in proximity to Northridge Elementary School and Commack High School, Kennedy said in a press statement.

“Among the many complaints each of us have received are speeding trucks, and failure to yield to the traffic signal at Scholar Lane and Townline Road,” Legislators Kennedy, Stern and Nowick said in a letter to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Edward Webber.

If residents have particular complaints associated with the roadways, they should contact their legislator at their district office.  Nowick may be reached at (631) 854-4900, Stern may be reached at (631) 854-5100 and Kennedy may be reached at (631) 854-3735.
