Postal workers from around Long Island demonstrate to keep sixth day of service.

Postal workers from around Long Island demonstrated Sunday against plans to half Saturday mail delivery service.

The postmaster general announced in February that Saturday service would stop because of funding problems.

About 300 people marched in front of the Huntington Station Post Office on Jericho Turnpike, shouting, "Five Days, No Way!" as passing drivers honked horns in support.

A stopgap funding measure awaiting President Obama's signature requires the Postal Service to maintain six-day delivery, according to an opinion issued by the Government Accountability Office. But, The Washington Post reported that two Republicans dispute the GAO's decision, and that "the requirement applies to delivery in general, but not mail delivery in particular."

The demonstration was organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Walter Barton, president of the Long Island local, said about 100 protests were scheduled around the country.
