Smithtown Town Board Approves New Admin Contract

Contract gives town administrators an average annual 1 percent raise from 2011 - 2014

Smithtown Town Board have approved a new contract that will give the town's department heads and administrators an average annual raise of 1 percent per year.

Smithtown town board approved a retroactive agreement for 2011- 2014 that laid out a 0 percent raise in 2011, 1 percent raise for 2012, 1.5 percent raise for 2013 and 1.5 percent raise for 2014 for the Smithtown Administrators Guild at their April 25 meeting. The contract was previously approved by the 30 members of the guild, which includes department heads, administrators, deputy clerks and similar positions.

Under the new contract, newly hired town administrators will be responsible for paying 15 percent of their health care insurance premiums, where previously it was only 10 percent according to Supervisor Patrick Vecchio.

The guild has been without a contract for roughly 2 years. While the pay raises will be retroactive, Vecchio said the health care insurance agreement will only affect new employees hired from this point forward.

Vecchio said he also negotiated to lower the starting salary for six vacant positions covered by the SAG's contract. Those changes include reducing the town engineer's starting pay from $125,000 to $117,000,  as well as the assistant town director of public safety and deputy town park manager.

The supervisor said the town is looking to hire a new engineer, but both the assistant town director of public safety and deputy town park manager have been vacant for several years and there are no plans to hire.
