Smithtown Town Board To Vote On 2013 Budget

Smithtown Town Board will hold its first monthly meeting 2 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall.

Smithtown's elected officials will cast their vote on the town's proposed 2013 budget and other matters on Tuesday.

Smithtown Town Board will hold its first meeting of November at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall at 99 West Main Street in Smithtown. This meeting was rescheduled from Nov. 6 due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy.

Supervisor Patrick Vecchio has proposed a $103 million budget for 2013, a spending hike increase of approximately 2.4 percent. If approved, property taxes would increase by $46.83 for the average homeowner whose house is assessed value is $5,500.

A large portion of the spending increase of $1.8 million is due mandatory cost increases in pensions and hospitalization insurance.

However, the town was able to carry over surplus funding from the Highway Department's snow removal fund as last year was such a mild winter, allowing elected officials to reduce snow removal taxes by $10.36 per household.

Vecchio said the proposed budget avoids laying off town employees and does not cut any town services. Instead, elected officials are proposed to take a $7.3 million dip into the town's reserve funds, or rainy day funds, to balance the budget while keeping taxes low.

In addition to voting on the 2013 fiscal budget, Smithtown elected officials will also vote on an agreement with the Town of Brookhaven to dispose of "vegetative debris" at their municipal landfill for $75 a load.

A public hearing will also be held on the section of Smithtown town code relating to tents, and how it relates to when permits are required and situations where there are exceptions.

hey someone has to pay for incompetence, I suppose it's only right that it's the taxpayer considering we're the ones who elected these people

Vecchio needs to go.. Smithtown is out of control. When watching the cleanup for sandy, why do we need town trucks just watching others work. I am ready for some extreme changes, and would love to also see overtime reports made public. I want to see who is working and what they are doing, and then start slashing the nonsense....Period. not very difficult!

There's more to it than this article is regurgitating from last week's news, check it out and vent a little: http://www.smithtownmatters.com/home/2012/11/17/for-some-town-employees-salaries-are-going-up-well-beyond-3.html

It is crazy, and there is so much truth behind the fact, people are too busy to really see what is going on.

I'm not surprised. Everyone on Long Island has this sick sense of entitlement to an increase in salary and benefits. Problem is no one cares who's pocket it comes out of. It's a vicious cycle. One that could destroy this town in just a few short years.
John Gruber November 20, 2012 at 02:58 am
yep. regardless of who they blame they still feel entitled to it

The biggest portion of our taxes each year are for education. Supervisor Patrick Vecchio has been keeping tax increases at the bare minimum each year so to blame him seems unfair, we need new sidewalks all over town and they did not have the monies to do all of them. There is so much waste in all areas of government. We are taxed to death, on our wages before we get them, then they double check you again in April to see where else you can be taxed. How about Huntington do they pay less taxes ?. that would be interesing since the do not have Vecchio.

Town taxes...still the best bang for the buck. Look at your tax bill. I think we get great service for the taxes. Look at all the parks and beaches and water ways, plus all the highway services from snow removal to leaf and brush pick up. If you don't like Vecchio just say it. Don't say that we are overpaying for the services we get.

For the record, I don't really are for the supervisor. I think new ideas about our downtowns would be a great thing to have.

I agree. The town taxes aren't the problem. But I do disagree about the raises though. If property taxes were not as high as they are there would be no need for this many increases. But like I said before, it's all a vicious cycle.

Whats nuts is that we pay some of the highest taxes in suffolk and we get nothing for it. Lets start with the taxes on our homes. Property tax- if you have a fence your taxed, a shed your taxed. A pool your taxed.. forget adding a finished basement or another living area. Your taxed heavily.. We pay some of the highest school taxes also. For what? They cut buses after school sport programs. But they have money for a multi million dollar football fields. Lol. The public parks are a disgrace. The dont have enough of them 1 and they arent up to date. Example. There are very few baseball fields for the kids to play on. And the schools have there own fields but use the public fields instead causing even more of a shortage. So again what do we pay for here in Smithtown? What do we get in return? I know we get corruption from our publuc officals. School board memembers and superintendent office. Parks dept. Beaches.. ect. Botto. Line is go to east islip look at there fields, there parks. There schools. And there taxes. All much different than smithtowns. Just one example. Vote this jerks out. Or we should move out

Matt, why don't you run for public office? You seem to know all about it. Our biggest finacial burden is school taxes....PERIOD!!! 70% of your property tax goes to the schools. Fight the good fight Matt. Maybe the town can trim its 7-8% of your property tax bill.
