Students Speak Out at Youth Council Meeting

High school students from around The Town of Huntington talked about advertising, teen parties and security cameras Monday night.

The Huntington Youth Council meeting at Town Hall brought about 70 students to Town Hall for a discussion of those topics and other issues, part of an initiative launched by Town Councilwoman Susan Berland.

School dress codes was another topic, with one speaker commenting on what she saw as heavier enforcement for girls than boys.

Students from all high schools in town are encouraged to participate, Berland said, with school guidance counselors and others letting students know about the program. Berland said students who participate are encouraged to go on to join other organizations and serve the community.

"It's a great turnout, with a lot of engaged young people who care about these issues," she said.

The council will meet again in the spring.

Joseph Leavy, chairman of humanities for the Huntington school district, said of the Youth Council, "We'd like it to continue and to have Huntington High School involved."
