Town Board Approves $185-Million Budget

The Town Board has approved its $185.2 million operating budget on a 3-2 vote.

The budget is an increase of  2.2 percent in spending but reflects a "net zero" tax increase, the town has said in the past. Several fees have increased.

Voting against the budget were board members Mark Mayoka and Gene Cook because they dispute the allocation of funds.

The board also approved an $8.8 million capital budget.

Councilwoman Susan Berland noted that the budget includes funds for a boathouse. The town said it program for 2014–2019 includes infrastructure related funding for resurfacing of parking lots and athletic courts, replacement of fencing, rehabilitation and building repairs of Town facilities, beach replenishment, and replacement of various playground equipment, vehicles and maintenance equipment.

Planned initiatives for 2014 and beyond include the completion of Coral Park, the reconstruction of the Gerard Street Parking Lot, a new bulkhead at the Halesite Town dock, the construction of a new rowing facility, funding for technology initiatives and for protection of our environment, town council members said.
