Town of Smithtown Approves Truck Restrictions on Townline Road

Community members spoke out against dangerous conditions caused by commercial trucks.

The Town of Smithtown Board approved the installation of signs that would restrict commercial trucks on Townline Road at the Board's monthly meeting at Town Hall Tuesday afternoon.

The decision comes after the Commack Community Association that trucks using Townline Road as a main route to the industrial park were causing unsafe traffic conditions along the road, which is home to and as well as .

Current signs on the road restrict trucks over 5,000 pounds from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., however residents say large and heavy trucks continue to barrel down the road at all hours.

In October, CCA member Bob Semprini said under the current restrictions, Townline Road is "literally an accident waiting to happen, and a serious accident at that." 

The new signs will prohibit trucks over 5,000 pounds from driving down Townline Road from Jericho Turnpike to Pulaski Road.

The Town of Smithtown Traffic Safety Department will be responsible for installing and maintaining the signs.

The Board also approved the installtion of a stop and yield sign at the intersection of Cornell Drive South at Cornell Drive.
