Town: U-Haul Business at Today's Cards is Illegal

The Jericho Turnpike U-Haul business has been issued a summons and will need to appear in the third district court in Huntington Station on Sept. 8.

The Town of Huntington on Aug. 3 issued a summons for Narjosh Inc., which operates as Today's Cards, to appear in court on Sept. 8 to defend the legality of its U-Haul rental business in the shopping center on Jericho Turnpike.

According to Joan Cergol, from Supervisor Frank Petrone's office, a notice of violation was delivered to Today's Cards in May claiming the rental site is illegal.

The shopping center, owned by Heatherwood Powers Realty LLC, received a second notice of violation on July 27, she said.

Today's Cards' manager, who did not wish to be identified, said he was notified that any business run out of the location needed to be approved by the town. The U-haul business is not approved, he said, it could take up to six months to complete the licensing process.

The manager said he pays taxes on the land in the large parking lot of the shopping center and insures seven U-haul trucks, including vans, trucks and trailers, for $1 million. The business has been in the parking lot for almost three years.

He said the shopping center was selected due to its proximity to local storage places.

But the area, according to the Town of Huntington, is zoned for general business, a C-6 classification that does not include car rentals.
