Who Should Run Against Vecchio?

Smithtown Supervisor said he will seek a 13th term. But who, Republican or Democrat, should he face?

Long Island's longest sitting town supervisor, Smithtown's Patrick Vecchio, has his eye on a record 13th term in office. But whether he wins one depends on whether he can once more get more votes than his opponents.

But who exactly will those opponents be?

As news of Vecchio's plans continue to engage Patch readers in our Smithtown communities, we'd like everyone to take a moment and let us know who they think should run against the supervisor. It could be a Republican you'd like to see challenge him in a primary or a Democrat you hope takes him on in a general election. We'll keep this list going for about a week and then we'll create a poll to find out who the most popular candidates are in town.

Unfortunately the "best man" may not be running.

I would not be surprised if that is the plan. And I second Greg Martinez's comment. No Dem will win. Not saying Smithtown does not need an infusion of new ideas but Smithtown is and will likely forever be a Republican dominated area. I personally feel you need to vote person first, party second, but in this ridiculously polarized political environment we are only further away from that.

Pat was first elected as a Democrat and I was at a function, the opening of the Nesconset Library in that strip mall before their new place. None of the Republicans would talk to him and since I always feel sorry for the underdog I talked to him. He changed to Republican by the next election. We need a supervisor who can revitalize Smithtown. If it wasn't for the Smithhaven mall, we would still be shopping at the Walt Whitman mall.

Having a woman for Supervisor would be a good idea - but she would have to be strong and learn from Pat's mistakes. Yes I agree- he does repay favors, for jobs and bids. So it's time for a change. Also time for a change within town council. Jane Conway is a good choice, but I don't think she would win. We need someone really strong and willing to go against the dept heads and the favor asking group. Or - what about Tom McCarthy??

Just skip politics and find someone decent. I'm glad I moved to St. James since it was a good place to raise the kids and luckily two are still raising their kids in the same town of Smithtown. The Three Village kids have a great school system and a beautiful town center. Our h'way dept. is much better.
