With State Sales Tax Repealed, is it Downtown, The Mall or to a Strip Mall?

Repeal of 4 percent clothing sales tax went into effect Sunday.

New York repealed the 4 percent state sales tax on Sunday on clothing, footwear and similar items costing less than $110 each, a move that could have locals headed shopping.

The program, which is in its second year, applies to items purchased in person, over the Internet, by phone or by mail. The qualifying amount for the sales tax exemption has doubled from clothing and footwear sold at $55 or less, to items sold at $110 or less.

The sales tax exemption is expected to save taxpayers an estimated $210 million and give local retailers an economic boost. But in the Smithtown-Three Village area, that could be a host of local retailers.

With the tax break in place, where do you plan to spend your cash. Do downtowns in Kings Park, Smithtown, Port Jefferson, Rocky Point or the Stony Brook Village Center get your business, or will you head to strip malls such as Commack's Mayfair Shopping Center or major shopping centers such as the Smith Haven Mall or Tanger's Outlets at Deer Park or Riverhead.
