QUICK STATS: Rental Market A Tiny One in Commack

Owner-occupied homes by far the norm in town, Census data show.

Despite it's sprawling neighborhoods, influx of coporate retail chains and nearness to major roadways and parks, the rental market in Commack makes up a very small slice of the local real estate, Census data show.

According to the U.S. Census Department American Community Survey Estimates, out of Commack's 11,947 housing units, only 811 are rentals, representing just above 6 percent of the total housing market. The latest ACS estimates are based on data from 2007-2011 and do not include numbers for "illegal" apartments and rentals.

Nationally, rentals make up about 45 percent of the housing stock, according to the Census.
