A Look at Tax Levy Increases: Commack Compared to Other School Districts

Which nearby school districts are and aren't piercing the tax cap.

The Commack Union-Free School District was not alone this year in making some tough budget-related decisions. However, Commack was one of the districts whose school administrators decided to play it safe, proposing a 2.6 percent tax levy increase that falls within the state's cap. Commack's budget will only need approval by a simple majority of voters.

In this area of Suffolk County, it seems districts are split between staying at or below the tax cap and going above it. Here is a look at where Commack stands in comparison to other school districts in Suffolk County:

District Enrollment* Adopted Budget Tax Levy Increase +/- District Cap Three Village 7,378 $178.6 million 4.48% Above cap 10,810 $215.3 million 2.23% Under cap Comsewogue 3,890 $79,114,408

These are just meaningless numbers...This comparison is useless because it does not provide any details underlying the reasons for the Tax Levy increases relative to each respective district.

From these summary figures we can see that Commack schools spend 22,772 per pupil: Smithtown schools spend 19,888 per pupil and Kings park schools spend 20,604 per pupil. These neighboring districts educate their students very very well at a lower per pupil cost. Any ideas about why this differential exists?

Hunderfund, Feltman and James?

Its more the BOE than anything else. Look at the ridiculous salaries that have been paid while Masciello has been on the BOE. Hunderfund and Feltman yes, James hasnt been there long enough to be the problem. Yes, he got a raise, but it was given by the BOE. Masciello, Pennacchio and Guber have to go.
