BOE Candidates Make Final Push for Votes

Candidates running for the Commack Board of Education were out at the High School and Middle School Tuesday, making a final campaign push as residents cast their votes.

Four individuals are running for the Board of Education this year. Only one of them, Jeffrey Egan, is an incumbent. He is facing off against newcomer, James Tampellini. Jarrett Behar and Steve Hartman are running for the open seat left by Joseph Pennacchio, who is ending his term.

The candidates handed out note cards and greeted residents outside of the polling stations as voters entered the schools to make their decision.

Candidates Behar and Tampellini were outside of the High School for part of the day, looking to get their names out there to voters.

"At this point, it's about talking to people and explaining that I'm going to be here in the schools for at least another 16 years and I will make sure the kids get the best education," Behar said. "I'm keeping it positive."

Tampellini said that he has been out since the early morning talking to people to make the changes he sees are needed within the school district.

"There are a lot of special interests here that we have to get away from," he said, adding that he wants to make sure the district's money is being spent in the right places.

Egan and Hartman are also out making the final push for votes. Egan said he is focused on the district's spending and maximizing revenues at a Meet the Candidates Night last week. Hartman said his main priority is keeping student programs and services.

The polls will be open until 9 p.m.
