Candidate Spotlight: Wunsch Promises Fiscal Responsibility

Peter Wunsch is running against Michael Chacon for Board of Ed seat.

Peter Wunsch, a former Commack Board of Education president, is running again, this time against first-time candidate Michael Chacon. In a phone interview, Wunsch spoke on the importance of keeping expenses down while maintaining the integrity of Commack's education levels and why he should be elected.

What is your relationship to Commack School District?

As a resident of East Northport, I have been invloved in the district for 29 years. I previously served on the Board of Ed, one year as President and two years as Vice President. My daughter is a proud Commack graduate.

What issues are you most concerned about?

Maintaining the educational quality of the Commack School District and continuing to monitor and hold down the cost in the district at a time when cost beyond our control are rising and state mandates are increasing.

Are you a member of any other organization(s)?

I have been on the Western Suffolk BOCES Board of Education for the past nine years, I have served as President for the past three. I am also President of the President of the Commack Educational Foundation, an organization that has raised thousands of dollars to supplement the Commack school budget, including the re-establishment of some of the high school honor societies. I also served as Chairman of the PTA Budget Committee for two years.

What is your occupation?

I work as a financial consultant for not-for-profit agencies.

If elected, what would you bring to the Board?

I can do the best job educationally and fiscally. I think we need somebody who has been at Board meetings and understand the issues. I’ve missed 8 board meetings in 15 years.
