Commack Junior Wins Grand Prize in Scholarship Contest

Matthew O'Connell won Optimum's Power to Learn "Hispanic Heritage Month" essay competition.

Matthew O’Connell is the grand prize winner of Optimum's Power to Learn "Hispanic Heritage Month" essay contest, earning him a $2,500 scholarship to the university of his choice.

The essay topic called for students to name a Latino, past or present, with whom they would choose to a day with an explain why. 

O’Connell wrote about Cesar Chavez, a migrant farm worker from California who championed for fair working conditions for migrant workers. Matthew said in his essay, "If I could meet Chavez, I would spend my time talking to him about the role words have in changing the world..." To read the entire essay, click here.

Earlier this year, O'Connell made waves in the pharmaceutical world for his innovative use of pictogram software to help people read the very small print on medicine bottles and pamphlets.  He presented his work at the annual International Pharmaceutical Federation Congress in Dublin, Ireland on Sept. 3, surrounded by pharmacist professionals.
