Commack Receives Good Sports Section Award

New York State Public High School Athletic Association awards the district for promoting good sportsmanship among parents, coaches and students.

Athletic Director Jeremy Thode presented Mary-Jo Masciello president of the Commack Union Free School District Board of Education with an award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for the 2009-2010 school year.

The plaque award is based on a self-assessment done by the individual schools in New York state and then a committee – of which Thode is a representative for Section XI – determines which schools have the proper programs in place to promote good sportsmanship.

Todd Nelson, assistant director of NYSPHSAA, said that the 780 schools in the association are asked to fill out an online self-assessment form and then the sections determine what three or four schools have stood out in their individual areas. From those three or four winners, another selection is made for the banner winners. Commack won the banner award in 2009, Nelson said.

Thode said many things are accounted for including, but not limited to, cheerleaders, school spirit, parents support, administrative policies and team policies.

Joseph Pennacchio, vice president, said that parents should also be thanked for contributing to the good sportsmanship shown by students in the district.
