Commack Schools Reopen Wednesday with Altered Bus Routes

Commack School District makes temporary changes to bus routes in neighborhoods whose streets still have downed trees, wires.

 

Commack students will be heading back to classes on Wednesday, but may have wait a slightly different bus stop for transportation to school. 

Commack School officials have made the decision to reopens schools on Wednesday, Nov. 7, more than a week after Hurricane Sandy. However, due to concerns of fallen trees and downed wires in several neighborhoods, the district has made some temporary changes to their bus routes.

"We understand that Sandy has disrupted regular routines, and that everyone is feeling the effects. Extra care will be taken to comfort our students, and to ensure that they feel safe and secure at school. Should the need arise, our social workers and psychologists will be readily available," Superintendent Donald James writes in a letter to parents. 

James lays out the changes to bus routes in a letter to parents posted on the district's website on Tuesday afternoon:

  • Change: Students living on Wisteria Road, Kirby Lane, Hedgerow Lane, Trumpet Lane, Kevin Road and Mangin Road will have their bus stops at the intersection of Dovecoat and their street. Students should wait approximately 50 feet from the intersection. 

    Affected Routes: High School Routes 4 and 12, Middle School Routes 1 and 8, Burr Routes 1 and 76 and North Ridge Routes 13 and 45. 
  • Change: Students on Amalia Drive and Sarina Drive will have their bus stops moved to the intersetion of the above street and Larkfield Road. Students should stand approximately 50 feet from the intersection. 

    Affected Route: High School Routes 4 and 46, Middle School Routes 1 and 41, Burr Route 1. 

Commack School officials are recommending that students arrive at their bus stops at least five minutes earlier than usual, and the district will be adding additional buses in these areas to make sure affected students have transportation. 

The district will continue to have four of its buildings open as warming and charging stations from 4 p.m to 8 p.m., weather permitting as forecasts call for a nor-easter to slam Long Island on Wednesday. 

In addition, several Commack High School events have been rescheduled: 

  • Wednesday evening Parent/Student/Teacher Meetings that were scheduled at Commack High School for Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. are cancelled. As indicated in our calendar, these meetings were "Invitation Only."
  • All attempts to reschedule the Masque and Wig Drama, along with other significant high school events are underway.

  • Please note that Commack High School PTA's meeting on  Nov. 8 is rescheduled for Nov. 15 at 7 p.m
