Commack Schools Schedule Common Core Workshops

The Commack School District has scheduled several workshops to introduce the new Common Core Standards to parents.

Common Core Standards aim for children to read more non-fiction, develop a bigger vocabulary through English language lessons, and in math, work more deeply in fewer topics and spend time practicing and memorizing math facts.

These new standards are already having a dramatic impact on what students learn in school and how they learn it. In New York State, there is also a major shift toward standardized test scores and the way teachers and principals are evaluated.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

Common Core Overview

• January 13, 2014, 7pm at Burr Intermediate

• January 14, 2014, 1pm at Sawmill Intermediate

English Language Arts and Mathematics Common Core Workshop, Grades 6-8

• February 5, 2014, 1pm at Commack Middle School

English Language Arts and Mathematics Common Core Standards Workshop, Grades K-5

• February 12, 2014, 1pm at Sawmill Intermediate

• February 12, 2014, 6pm at Burr Intermediate
