All it took was a phone call from Sandy-stricken Far Rockaway Little League to start the ball rolling in Commack.

Community resident and firefighter Wayne Forte received a call from Far Rockaway Little League Coach Marc Bacchus, who was wondering if Commack could lend a hand in replacing some equipment for the children. Hurricane Sandy washed away or damaged most of the team's equipment, and the season was about to begin.

Wayne contacted Commack's Coordinator of Community Relations, Debbie Virga, and the two of them took up the challenge immediately.

Students of all ages gathered their new and used equipment for the donation.

One student, sixth grader Stephanie Schneider, collected from her Commack North Little League and her Bandit Travel Teammates.

The following items were collected and personally bought to Far Rockaway by Forte:

  • 37 Helmets
  • 5 Catchers Masks
  • 64 bats
  • 52 Baseball gloves
  • 27 Baseball pants
  • 26 pairs of baseball socks
  • 11 bat bags
  • 21 catcher gear sets
  • 18 jerseys
  • 25 pairs – batting gloves
  • 8 buckets of baseballs
  • 48 pairs of cleats
