Commack Teachers Create Tribute to Sandy Hook

The art department of Burr Intermediate create a peace mural for shooting victims.

After the tragic shooting in Newtown Conn., staff at Burr Intermediate School in Commack wanted to reach out and lend their support to the victims.

To show their sympathies, the art department created a mural to depict the school’s wishes of hope, peace, and strength.

Jennifer Fleming, a school art teacher, planned and sketched the mural, incorporating her colleagues’ collective intentions and ideas, and then engaged staff in the mural’s completion.

The words surrounding the dove encompass thoughts and prayers for healing, and "our hand prints represent the connection we feel as educators to the event," Principal Rhonda Pratt said. "The single red heart symbolizes the love we wish to see in our world."
