New Cancer Study Announced at Commack HS

The American Cancer Society is looking for residents ages 30-65 to participate.

The American Cancer Society is looking for local residents to participate in a ground-breaking prevention study, a Suffolk County representative from the organization announced at Commack High School's Relay for Life Kick Off event Tuesday.

"The study looks at genetics associated with cancer to help people make decisions that will save many, many more lives," Sylvia Diaz, Regional Vice President at American Cancer Society said.

At the Relay for Life Kick Off Tuesday, Diaz recalled her own battle with cancer 12 years ago.

"My mother looked at me very helplessly. She welled up very emotionally looking at her only daughter and that helplessness is something I’ll never, ever forget," she said.

"There’s so many people who tell me on a regular basis that they wish there was something they could do. Here's something now you can do," she said.

The study, which will involve people ages 30-65 aims to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

The study beings in April and will involve 2,000 people.
