New Leadership on Commack BOE

Peter Wunsch is elected president and Steve Hartman is elected vice president of the board.

Newly elected Board of Education members Steve Hartman and James Tampellini took their seats for the first time on the Commack school board Tuesday.

Hartman was also elected to be vice president by the board. Peter Wunsch won the presidential nomination. Mary Jo Masciello, who previously served as president and Deborah Guber, who served as vice president returned to their roles as trustees.

In their first meeting as board members, Hartman and Tampellini voted on several district appointments, designations and read opted several district policies and procedures.

Tampellini voted against a handful of appointments, including the district clerk,  citing high costs.

"I believe that it is our obligation to be as fiscally responsible as possible and in light of the severe economic climate and not seeing an end in sight to that, that we have to be more diligent now with our expenses and reconsider other cost-saving measures to be taken," he said.

Tampellini also voted in opposition to the reappointment of the district's legal staff, stating, that he believed the tenure of the current counsel has tainted its ability to provide the district with independent legal advice.
