A look at the local memorials honoring those that were lost and those that helped after the September 11 attacks.

Commack residents looking to pay tribute to the heroes and victims of the World Trade Center attacks can visit and pottery shop, which have memorials on display through the weekend.

At the high school, hundreds of flags line Scholar Lane as part of Flags for Freedom, which were hand-assembled and placed along school grounds by volunteers.

Each flag was purchased by a member of the community, who could dedicate it to a loved one, a first responder or someone lost on 9/11. The money raised by the flags will be used for scholarships in honor of Justin Wilson, a 2004 Commack graduate who died in Afghanistan in 2007. Donations will also be sent to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.

"I wanted it to be a remembereance of the people we lost and the people who helped out," said owner Stephanie Giardina.

Giardina and her staff spent a month and a half over the summer carefully crafting each piece of the memorial display, which will be lit with candles on Sunday in honor of the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Members of the community are encouraged to visit both memorials throughout the weekend.
